Minneapolis Public Service Building Project Details:
With its contemporary architecture, the 350,000-square-foot Minneapolis Public Service Building stands out amongst the other buildings in Minneapolis’s Government District. The facility is uniquely wrapped in aluminum and glass, and houses 10 city departments and more than 1,200 city employees. Previously scattered across nine different locations, the building brings important city services together in one building, including licensing/building inspections, regulatory services, planning and economic development, finance, public works, 311, IT, health departments, and certain divisions of the police department and crime lab.
Starting in 2017, the City of Minneapolis sought to provide a space to better reflect the communities it serves while balancing both security and transparency. The ground floor of the 11-story facility includes retail space, a conference center, public restrooms, and a large feature staircase in the lobby. Floors three through nine provide employee office spaces, and the tenth floor provides employee common spaces, including a green roof and outdoor spaces. The building is conveniently positioned next to the bus and light-rail stations and is also connected to downtown Minneapolis’s skyway system. The project team focused on intentional design, including convenience, a welcoming and accessible atmosphere, social and urban infrastructure connectivity, and more.
ICS/CPMI provided owner’s representative services for this new community-centric facility. The Minneapolis Public Service Building was granted the 2023 AIA Architecture Award, which recognizes excellence in design achievement.
