The Discover Program
In any workplace, multi-dimensional problem-solving and thinking are critical. Today, employees favor potential employees who emulate those traits and bring relevant internship experience to the table. Internships are invaluable, especially for college students and graduates.
An internship brings an abstract theory that is presented and discussed in the classroom to life. And even more than that, it’s discovering what it’s really like to work somewhere. With recruiters from every company seeking out the top candidates, it can be a challenge to attract top talent.
The Discover Program ICS Consulting challenges potential interns to come find out the real deal. Only they can decide if what we’re telling them at career fairs and interviews matches up with our actual company, actual opportunities, and actual culture. We want our interns to discover what it’s like to put out some of the most innovative engineering and construction projects in our region. We want them to discover what it means to be a part of a company who cares.
One intern who took the challenge this past summer was Brendon Gould. He is currently taking online courses through the University of Phoenix to earn a Project Management Certification and a Bachelor’s in Business Management focused in Construction Management. This was Brendon’s second summer working with ICS as a Construction Management Intern.
Projects Worked On:
Brendon had the opportunity to work on multiple small projects this summer. One of the highlights for him was constructing an ALC building at East Central. Gould stated, “It was a good learning experience and really neat to see a project from start to finish.” Additionally, Brendon completed HVAC updates and had the opportunity to work with design teams in Brainard. In the years to come, he hopes to gain more experience in the project management side of the field.

Valuable Lessons Learned:
Through Brendon’s internship experience, he has realized the importance of learning Procore – the primary program utilized by project and construction managers. Brendon utilized this program regularly to complete submittals, RFIs, and daily logs. He also gained professional skills such as pro-active communication, teamwork, and responsibility.
“When I was a senior in high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. But, ever since my first summer internship with ICS, I have learned exactly what I want to do.” Gould said, “I really love what I’m doing and the people I get to work with. ICS is helping me achieve what I want in life.”

Leaving an Impact:
Brendon believes he has left an impact on those around him. He explains, “I have impacted my family by being the first one to go to college. Having an internship allows me to prove to them that they can be proud of me and my future.” Brendon has also impacted his co-workers by taking on tasks and being the first to lend a helping hand.
